Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to treat benign uterine tumors (fibroids) by blocking their blood supply. Through a small puncture in the femoral artery (groin), a catheter is guided with real-time X-ray imaging to the arteries that is guided to the blood vessels that supply the uterine fibroids. Once properly positioned, biocompatible microspheres are delivered to block blood flow to the fibroids. Without a blood supply, the fibroids gradually decrease in size, leading to effective relief of symptoms.It is performed by interventional radiology specialists in a catheterization laboratory, and is carried out under conscious sedation, avoiding spinal or general anesthesia while ensuring the patient remains relaxed and comfortable throughout. Following the procedure, the patient remains hospitalized for approximately 24 hours and can return to normal activities within 5 to 7 days.
